Planning the future of a changing district

Oregon’s second largest district is highly regarded as a progressive and well-managed system serving a growing, diverse population.  In 2009, the Beaverton School Board reconsidered the fundamental values and goals of public education.  We helped launch an ambitious process to actively engage the community in a dialogue about the District, resulting in broad agreement on a clear direction for the future.

  • Thousands of parents, teachers, staff members, students, and community leaders joined in a wide-ranging dialogue about educational  values, strategies, and best practices.
  • One defining moment came when 92 Latino parents came together to discuss their hopes for their children’s education.  They brought along more than 100 children who played happily while their moms and dads planned for their future. 
  • The school board adopted a concise statement of values and direction to guide its decisions over the next five years.  Most importantly,  they committed the District to helping children achieve their own highest individual potential, regardless of income, ethnicity, or abilities and weighing vocational and civic skills as highly as academics...
