Portland Farmers Market
A group committed to healthy food plans to sustain the community and its farmers
The Portland Farmers Market (PFM) is internationally recognized as a model for the distribution of quality, locally grown produce. Their five weekly markets provide a treasured urban experience of community and contribute to Portland’s growing food culture. PFM engaged D2 to create a strategic plan to guide the work of the organization.
- We designed and conducted focus groups with farmers and vendors, community stakeholders, and other market managers throughout the region. Participants created an asset map of local food system players and shared their hopes for PFM’s role in the sustainable agriculture movement.
- We worked with board and staff to re-craft the organization’s vision and mission as a 501(c)6 trade association of market vendors committed to broad community outcomes.
- We guided development of benchmarks that will allow PFM to measure progress toward specific outcomes such as increased access to healthy food for low-income families and percentage of local ingredients source by food vendors.
