The Chalkboard Project

Foundations come together to play a major role in the rough-and-tumble world of public policy

  • Five large foundations (later expanded to six) worked in a close collaboration. The CEO and one trustee of each foundation served as board members and met at least monthly for more than two years.
  • They moved beyond the normal comfort zone of foundations to proactively create new strategic initiatives.
  • We produced a suite of collateral materials, including a workbook and DVD for foundations considering public policy collaboration; a book documenting the process and outlining lessons learned; and a library of public engagement tools.
